We asked Trainer Brooke for her number one tip to manage stress and anxiety to be a healthier, happier you, and you just might not guess this one: PLAY!
As adults, we often get bogged down by our day-to-day stressors, and we have a hard time just playing. When you think about play versus control (a big component of stress and anxiety), they can’t co-exist. Think about when you go past a park where kids are engaged in joyful play. Wouldn’t you like to get back to that state of joy?
Brooke suggests figuring out what you love doing that’s playful and allows you to relinquish some control. Maybe try something like:
- Hiking with a friend.
- Going for a walk in nature.
- Playing games, like board games or family charades.
- Silly play with your kids. Brooke loves to jump on the trampoline with her son.
- Horseback riding.
- Trying out a new craft without expectations of perfection.
- Bond with your teens by initiating play of their favorite games.
If you can engage in joyful play, it will get you out of your normal, often stressful routine. And studies show that when adults break out of their stressful routines, it can rejuvenate them. We bounce back better, with more resilience when we experience joy.
